Celebrating Immigrants in Boston

Last night I had the opportunity to attend the Annual Solas Awards Dinner in Boston. This event, sponsored by the Irish Immigration Center, honors a number of individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to American society.

"Solas" is a Gaelic word meaning "light"

This year three individuals received Solas Awards. Teresa Heinz, Chairman of the Heinz Family Philanthropies, received an award for her philanthropic work. Janice Loux, President of UNITE HERE Local 26, received the community leadership award. John McGrail, founder of the Mayo Group, received the corporate leadership award.

The whole affair was very inspiring. It was a celebration of the remarkable contribution that immigrants make to our American society. So different than the zenophobic messages we often hear on talk radio and cable television.

My congratulations to the Board and staff of the Irish Immigration Center for a wonderful evening!
